Hero Health | Add medication flow

Add Medication

The enhanced Add Medication feature offers a streamlined and secure approach to medication management, complemented by a new dose-scheduling method.

My role

  • Led UI/UX design process for the Add medication feature enhancement, from First-run experience (FRE) to ongoing use.

  • Worked closely with the regulatory and engineering teams to ensure compliance with user safety standards and address any issues that came up.

  • Conducted thorough user acceptance testing (UAT) to ensure that all functions, visuals, layout, and copy were accurately implemented.

Problems

The process of adding medications to the Hero system is a crucial part of the overall user experience, alongside loading/refilling and dispensing medications. However, user feedback and data analysis have revealed several problems associated with this process.

Time-consuming Medication Entry

Users spend a significant amount of time adding their medications to the system. With many Hero users taking around 8 medications daily, entering medication and schedule information for all their medications during the first run experience (FRE) becomes time-intensive.

User Confusion

Users often experience confusion during the sign-up and add medications process in the FRE. Some users feel overwhelmed and apprehensive about making mistakes, leading them to abandon the setup process. This issue is prevalent enough that the Membership Experience team regularly hosts group sessions to assist users in completing the setup.

Manual Creation of Prescription Medications

Users encounter difficulties finding prescription medications in the database, prompting them to manually create entries in the system. This issue primarily arises when users include other details such as medication type, form, or strength in their search, rather than being solely caused by typos.

Missing Feature: Every X day

One important feature that has been consistently requested by users is the ability to set medication schedules on alternate days. Doctors often prescribe taking medications on alternate days to have precise control over certain health conditions.

Addressing these challenges, along with the addition of the requested "Every X day" feature, is crucial to improving the overall user experience and streamlining the medication management process within the Hero app.

Enhanced medication search capabilities

Suggested medication based on the user's health condition

To save time when adding medication, I came up with an idea to make it easier to find the right medication by suggesting options based on the user's conditions. This will also help Hero better to understand the user's health through the collected data.

Improved medication search suggestions

I collaborated with the engineering team to enhance Hero's search function, ensuring users receive accurate and relevant results to prevent creating their own prescription medication.

Displaying both branded and generic names

Following a thorough analysis of how users add their medications, we have decided to display both branded and generic medication options in the search results. This way, users can easily view other related medications when searching for a specific one.

Ideations and Spec

Streamlined Add Medication flow

Analyzing the original flow

Before redesigning the process for adding medication, I carefully examined the current flow to determine which areas could be improved or simplified by removing certain steps such as the Store inside or outside option, interaction warnings, pill count, and expiration information.

Ideations

During the ideation phase, I experimented with various layout options to find effective ways of displaying information and guiding users through the process. Additionally, I pitched new ideas regarding logic and efficiency to the product and engineering teams.

Medication info & frequency

The medication attribute and dose frequency section have been simplified. The “Every X day" scheduling option also introduced empowering users to precisely follow their doctor's prescription when medications are meant to be taken on alternate days. This feature ensures that users can easily adhere to their prescribed medication regimen by setting up dose schedules that align with their specific treatment plan.

User testing result

The term "Every X day" was previously referred to as "On a regular interval." However, during user testing, some participants were unsure about the distinction between "On a regular interval" and "Every day." Consequently, the term was modified to enhance clarity.

Add schedule details

We have updated the design and user interface of the dose schedule section to make it easier to understand. Now, there is an additional field for "how many times a day" to match the prescription instructions.

User testing result

Initially, the "How many times a day" option began at "0". However, during user testing, it was discovered that participants were unaware they needed to tap the '+' button to add a pill before continuing. As a result, we adjusted the starting value to "1".

Enhanced As-needed entry

The enhanced as-needed entry addresses two scenarios: 1. Medications taken on an as-needed basis, and 2. Additional doses of scheduled medications based on the user's daily condition. The previous as-needed flow, which consisted of separate entries leading to confusion, has been consolidated into a single entry. Additionally, the new as-needed entry offers improved instructions and enhanced safety settings.

Add & edit as-needed flows

Confirmation

Typically, scheduled prescription medications cannot be taken on an as-needed basis. To make things easier, the "allow as-needed" setting is hidden from the user when dealing with such medications within the FRE.

The dispense passcode feature has been replaced with the med access passcode feature, which has been removed from the Add medication flow. This significant change provides enhanced medication security by allowing users to protect all their medications simultaneously. The focus has shifted from preventing the dispensing of selected medications to safeguarding all medications from curious minds.

Success and Medication list

User testing result

During user testing, participants were unsure what the original ‘in-Hero’ icons were trying to depict. After removing the ‘in-Hero’ icons and leaving only the ‘out-of-Hero’ icons, there was significantly less confusion.

Visual update

As part of this project, the visual design for the Add Medication sections was also updated. To learn more about the visual redesign process and explore further details, please refer to the App Visual Redesign Project.

Result

As part of the overall redesigned onboarding experience, the updated version was successfully shipped in January 2023. The redesign included significant improvements to the signup process, resulting in a 17% increase in setup completion rates.
