Insights - Adherence Data Visualization
Insights showcase user adherence rates and trends, along with providing helpful information and motivational encouragement to support users in their medication journey.

What I worked on
Led the exploration and finalization of the user experience and determining effective ways to visualize various data.
Collaborated with the engineering & product team to establish adherence calculations and rules, with a focus on ensuring the reliability and ease of comprehension of the adherence data.
Conducted user acceptance testing (UAT) to verify the correct functioning, visual presentation, layout, and copy implementation.
Problem and opportunity
Minimum value provided
The Insights feature in the Hero app has been a significant component since its inception. However, it currently offers limited value to users as it only displays week-by-week trends and adherence rates per medication. This minimal functionality fails to provide comprehensive insights into users' medication adherence behaviors and hinders the overall usefulness of the feature.
Misleading adherence calculation
The adherence calculation within the Insights feature poses a problem due to its focus on the dose level. While it works accurately in most cases, it fails to reflect the true adherence of users in situations where partial schedule dose dispense occurs due to reasons like an empty cartridge or expiration. This misleading calculation undermines the reliability and effectiveness of the Insights feature in tracking and analyzing users' medication adherence patterns.
Opportunity to close the medication journey cycle
The Hero system has been successful in reminding users to take their medications effectively. However, there is a need to provide users with a way to track their progress and find motivation in their medication adherence journey.
Additionally, there is an exciting opportunity to incorporate the ability for users to log their health condition using third-party devices and cross-reference it with their medication adherence. By closing the medication journey cycle through tracking, motivation, and health condition logging, Hero can turn into a personal health platform.
Prior the project
Before working on the Insights project, I had experience working on a health measurement project involving tracking factors such as blood pressure, BMI, and A1C. Although the project did not ultimately come to fruition, it provided me with valuable knowledge in visualizing data.
Explorations
Email explorations
To begin my explorations, I searched for the optimal amount of weekly adherence data to present to the user. Through this process, I gained insights into effective ways of visualizing and summarizing the data.
Email & app relationship
Once I settled on the weekly email approach, I delved into how it relates to the Insights section in the Hero app. Through exploration, we determined that the Insights section should have a two-level view, with a summary and detail option, to display more information.
Insights overview & details
During this round of exploration, we concentrated on determining the layout and information architecture. Our main objective was to determine which information should be included in the summary section and which information should be included in the detail section.
Refinement
After finalizing the information architecture, I proceeded to add color and enhance the layout with more intricate details. Additionally, I worked on perfecting various states like empty, unknown, and loading, as well as ensuring adherence logic and resolving edge cases.

Tracking progress: Showcasing accurate weekly and monthly adherence rates
The overview page presents users with a convenient snapshot of their adherence progress, showcasing the weekly and monthly average adherence rates. This calculation accurately reflects the medication adherence rate by considering the number of pills taken, providing users with the most precise measure of their adherence.
Empowering insights: Analyzing adherence data for informed decision-making
Users can gain valuable insights from the adherence data of the previous week or month on the overview page. It showcases informative details, such as the average time taken to dispense medication, highlighting the best or worst adherence rates based on the time of day, and more. This information empowers users to understand their adherence patterns and make informed decisions.
Milestone recognition: Celebrating achievements and inspiring adherence efforts
As users reach significant milestones in their medication adherence journey, the overview page offers them encouraging messages and recognition for their achievements. These milestones serve as a source of motivation, providing positive reinforcement and inspiring users to maintain their adherence efforts.
User feedback and referrals: Gathering insights for improvement
To gather valuable insights and measure the helpfulness of the Insights feature, a feedback widget has been added at the bottom of the page. Users can express whether the insights are helpful or not. If users find the feature useful, they can also refer Hero to someone who may benefit from its capabilities.
Weekly & monthly details
The weekly and monthly detail pages provide users with a closer look at their adherence progress. At the top of the page, a bar graph and calendar view showcase day-to-day or week-to-week performance. Scrolling down reveals more detailed information, including the number of doses taken on time, late, skipped, missed, or taken as-needed, along with specific times. Additionally, users receive encouragement badge if they achieve a perfect adherence day or maintain a rate above 80% for the week.

Other platforms
Extend the established Insights visual element from the Hero app to other places, including the weekly email, Apple Watch app, and the enterprise portal software.
Result
The Insights feature's data visualization capabilities have served as a foundation for future enhancements in Hero. Inspired by its potential, the product team has initiated projects for health activity reminders, health data recording, and integration with Apple Health. These developments aim to provide users with a comprehensive and streamlined experience for managing their health within the Hero app.
